Background of the study

A peripheral language used among Nigerians to aid communication requirements in particular interaction circumstances, Pidgin English (also known as Nigeria Pidgin) or Brokin English (another name for Pidgin English) is a phrase that is used to indicate an English-based pidgin. Just like every other pidgin language that has been developed in various cultural settings where the users' original language is not spoken. Language is a medium of communication that allows for the transmission of a wide variety of messages on a daily basis, as stated by Adegbola (2022). Pidgin is a contact language that developed in Nigeria as a result of the mixing of local languages with other languages from across the world (English). Agbana (2022), in an effort to characterize pidgin, sees it as "some type of a marginal language that evolves to meet certain communication demands under well-defined settings." This perspective is supported by Agbana's definition of what pidgin is. According to the description given above, pidgin is not an official language; rather, it is an informal language that is used for communication, particularly amongst those who do not understand each other's native tongue. In a subsequent piece of writing, Agheyisi (2020) outlined two requirements that must be met before a language can be classified as pidgin. "Its grammatical structure and its vocabulary must be drastically reduced; secondly, the resulting language must be native to none of those who speak it," they said in their argument that for a language to be considered pidgin, "its grammatical structure and its vocabulary must be sharply reduced" (Akande, 2022). According to Akindele (2021), who agrees with the aforementioned viewpoint, a pidgin typically combines elements of the native language of its users and is typically simpler than those native languages in that it has fewer words, less morphology, and a more restricted range of phonological and syntactic options. This is in consonance with the position that was presented earlier. Rickford's passage is, to some degree, contextually appropriate to Nigerian pidgin in the sense that its phonological, morphological, and grammatical structures are, in comparison to those of any other standard language, fundamentally constrained. In addition to this, the social communication roles it serves are often limited to spoken exchanges and unstructured contexts. In spite of the fact that some academics, such as Rickford (2020), are of the opinion that "a pidgin is sharply restricted in social role, used for limited communication between speakers of two or more languages who have repeated or extended contacts with each other, for example through trade, enslavement, or migration," this perspective on pidgins is not universally applicable to all pidgins. The sociolinguistic reality in Nigeria today demonstrates that Nigerian pidgin is utilized not only in informal settings, but also in other formal contexts. This is the case due to the fact that Nigerian pidgin is used in both informal and formal settings (Akande, 2008). Pidgin is also used in various contexts, including as the media, particularly in the presenting of television and radio programs, the presentation of comedic material, the fabrication of advertisements and jingles, and the production of other types of programming. To this end, the research examines audience perception of Pidgin English usage in broadcast media: Radio Kogi, Lokoja.
